GTA 6 Price Leaks, Rumors, and Speculations (2022)
Price of Previous-Gen GTA and Rockstar Games
Here are some of the prices of the most popular titles from Rockstar Games, the developers of the GTA franchise. Please note that they are the retail prices of these games at the time of release and might have since been impacted by certain offers and discounts. GameLaunch Price (in USD)Release DateGTA 3$50October 22, 2001GTA Vice City$50October 29, 2002GTA San Andreas$50October 26, 2004GTA VC Stories$50October 31, 2006GTA 4$60April 29, 2008GTA 5$60September 17, 2013Red Dead Redemption 2$60October 26, 2018Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition$60November 11, 2021 From a glance, it looks like Rockstar Games uses a specific price for a few years and then raises it by 10 USD. But if you check the release dates, you can time the price hike with the popular market crash of 2008. And considering how GTA 6 will release after the COVID-19 years and the recent market crash, it won’t be surprising to find GTA 6 priced at $70.
Take-Two’s Take on Pricing
When it comes to the popular GTA franchise, Rockstar Games is not the only decision maker. Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive also has a significant hold on the situation. Because of that, the way they price their other modern game can directly affect GTA VI’s pricing. And that is exactly how the situation is turning out.
In March of 2021, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, claimed — “We announced a $70 price point for NBA 2K21, and our view was that we’re offering an array of extraordinary experiences, lots of replayability,” at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telcom Conference. He further backed his point by adding, “The last time there was a frontline price increase in the US was 2005-2006, so we think consumers are ready for it.”
So, even if we don’t have direct confirmation of GTA 6’s price, Take-Two does feel comfortable pricing their top-of-the-line games at least a $70 price mark. Realistically, thanks to the massive success of GTA V, things won’t be any different for GTA 6.
How Much Will GTA 6 Cost?
Considering the comments from Take-Two Interactive and the release pattern of the franchise, it’s safe to assume that GTA 6 will cost at least $70 at release on next-gen consoles (GTA 6 might not come to PS4 and Xbox One). Such a steep price tag is would put the game at par with most new and upcoming AAA games on the market.
GTA 6 Total Price Might Increase; Thanks to DLCs
If the launch price of GTA 6 doesn’t seem pricey, its DLCs might. At the moment, most GTA 6 leaks and rumors point to an expanding story and an ever-growing world that will require you to purchase new DLCs as they launch. We don’t think that not buying the DLC will impact the original story. However, it can keep you from experiencing the true potential of the game.
In any case, the latest DLC of GTA 5 costs $9.99. We expect the GTA 6’s DLCs to be priced around a similar price range. Though, it would be interesting to see if subscription services like Xbox Game Pass can provide us some relief.
